Realizable Entities in Basic Formal Ontology

چکیده
Numerous research groups are now utilizing Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) as an upper-level framework to assist in the organization and integration of biomedical and other types of information. In this paper, we attempt to elucidate the categories of role, disposition, function, and capability in BFO by means of definitions and examples. We also discuss tendency as one variety of disposition, and introduce the defined classes artifactual function and biological function, providing definitions for each. Our motivation is to help advance the coherent ontological treatment of these categories and to shed light on BFO’s general structure and use.

?Logic and Formal Ontology: Is the Final Formal Ontology Possible
Musa Akrami AbstractMany philosophers and logicians have contemplated the relationship between ontology and logic. The author of this paper, working within a Bolzanoan-Husserlian tradition of studying both ontology and logic, considers ontology as the science of the most general features of beings and the most general relations among them. He considers logic as the science concernin...
متن کاملThe ontology of medically related social entities: recent developments
BACKGROUND The Ontology of Medically Related Social Entities (OMRSE) was initially developed in 2011 to provide a framework for modeling demographic data in Resource Description Framework/Web Ontology Language. It is built upon the Basic Formal Ontology and conforms to Open Biomedical Ontologies Foundry's best practices. DESCRIPTION We report recent development of OMRSE which includes represe...
متن کاملReferent Tracking for Treatment Optimisation in Schizophrenic Patients
The IPAP Schizophrenia Algorithm was originally designed in the form of a flow chart to help physicians optimise the treatment of schizophrenic patients. We examined the current version from the perspective of recent work on terminologies and ontologies thereby drawing on the resources of Basic Formal Ontology, and this with the objective to make the algorithm appropriate for Semantic Web appli...
متن کاملReexamining fiat, bona fide, and force dynamic boundaries for geopolitical entities and their placement in DOLCE and BFO
This article reexamines fiat, bona fide, and force dynamic boundaries as they have been applied to geopolitical entities (specifically states and nations) and the classification of geopolitical entities based on the ontological characteristics of their territorial boundaries. It is argued that state territory is always bounded by fiat boundaries and that no bona fide state territory exists. Thi...
متن کاملRealism for scientific ontologies
Science aims to develop an accurate understanding of reality through a variety of rigorously empirical and formal methods. Ontologies are used to formalize the meaning of terms within a domain of discourse. The Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) is an ontology of particular importance in the biomedical domains, where it provides the top-level for numerous ontologies, including those admitted as part o...
